When he’s not racing stock cars at Thunder Road in Barre, Dwayne Lanphear can usually be found at L&L Farms, his 150-cow dairy in Morristown. Racing and farming are family affairs for Dwayne: his father, Joe, is a retired farmer and race car driver who still helps out around the farm and track, and his son, Brandon, works on the farm full time and is an up-and-coming driver in his own right. Brandon represents the family’s fourth generation on the farm.

Located near Stowe and the Village of Morrisville, with excellent views of the Worcester Range and Mount Mansfield, the Lanphear farm is in an area of high development pressure. Dwayne conserved 130 acres to ensure that the land will remain intact for Brandon to keep farming into the future. In addition to protecting more than 100 acres of prime and statewide farm soils, the conservation includes special water-quality protections along several tributaries of the Lamoille River. Native trees and shrubs will be maintained along the banks, because they reduce erosion and offer shade as well as nutrients to aquatic animals.
