2019 Annual Meeting & Celebration

October 6, 2019

Please join us to celebrate successes in making farmland affordable, getting new farmers on the land, and nurturing the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs. Come learn how VLT’s Farmland Access Program is supporting farm businesses as they adapt and innovate in response to a changing farm economy.

Field Trips

1. Elmer Farm Tour, Middlebury
Meet at 1:45 pm to drive/carpool. Easy.
Tour one of the very first Farmland Access Program farms, which grows more than 35 different vegetables, an array of flowers and culinary herbs, and hosts a CSA. elmerfarm.com. Limit two groups of 25 each.

2. Explore an Old-Growth Hemlock Stand
Meet at 1:45 pm. Moderate.
Learn about the many plants and animals on the Bread Loaf lands and explore a stunning patch of old-growth hemlock forest. We’ll discuss geology, soils, plants, forest carbon, and VLT’s restoration work on old growth. Limit two groups of 25 each.

3. Short Walk to Middlebury River
Meet at 1:45 pm. Moderate.
Take a leisurely walk through a meadow where bobolinks nest and learn about management of their habitat and other ecologically sensitive areas. Limit 25.

4. Tour the Historic Bread Loaf Campus
Meet at 1:45 pm. Easy.
Tour campus buildings and learn about the history of Bread Loaf, which began with a gift of land in 1915 and has grown into a premiere center for literature, writing, and theater arts. Limit 25.

5. Nature Photography
Meet at 1:45 pm. Moderate.
Learn how to take great nature photos with your cell phone in this relaxed and fun workshop led by a professional outdoor photographer. Various locations near campus; limit 20.

Registration

No charge for business meeting. Lunch and field trips, $25 per person; free for children 12 and under. Register here. Registration deadline: October 2.

Directions: The Bread Loaf campus is located in Ripton, Vermont, about 20 minutes from Middlebury. The GPS location found in most Internet map tools is 4229 Route 125, Ripton, Vermont 05766.

From I-89 North or South, take I-89 North to Exit 9 toward US-2/Middlesex/Moretown/VT-100. From there, turn left onto Center Road. Turn left onto US-2 East. Turn right onto VT-100B South. Continue onto VT-100 South, and turn right onto VT-125 West. Bread Loaf campus will be on your right.

Look for the pink VLT signage to direct you as you near the venue.
