Forest Grows in the Mad River Valley While many slopes and peaks in the Mad River Valley draw skiers and tourists by the thousands, the distinctive summit of Scrag Mountain is visited mostly by bear, moose, and beaver, as well as hikers and hunters seeking trails less traveled. This destination for adventurers and refuge for wildlife was first conserved in 1992, when a resident donated a conservation easement on 360 acres of mountainside to VLT, then gifted the land to the Town of Waitsfield. In the summer of 2009, a second gift of 200 acres to the Town enabled Waitsfield to expand the Scrag Municipal Forest. This 560-acre town forest now protects more than one mile of scenic ridgeline, headwater streams, significant wetlands, and endless opportunities to experience nature without seeing another soul.
